TAX-SMART GIVING
Generosity that may also reduce your tax burden
There are ways to support Unity of Kalamazoo that may offer significant tax advantages—especially if you are retired or own investments that have increased in value.
OPTION 1: GIVE DIRECTLY FROM YOUR IRA Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD)
If you are age 70½ or older, you may be able to make a charitable gift directly from your IRA to Unity of Kalamazoo.
A QCD can be especially helpful if you must take a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD).
How it works:
Contact the financial institution that holds your IRA.
Tell them you want to make a Qualified Charitable Distribution directly to Unity of Kalamazoo.
The funds must go directly from the IRA custodian to the church to qualify as a QCD.
A qualifying QCD is generally excluded from your taxable income and can count toward your RMD for the year.
Because the QCD is excluded from income, you generally do not also claim the same gift as a charitable deduction.
OPTION 2: GIVE APPRECIATED STOCK
Do you own stock that is worth considerably more than you paid for it? Instead of selling the stock and donating the cash, you can transfer the shares directly to Unity of Kalamazoo. For appreciated securities held for more than one year, this can potentially provide two tax advantages:
Avoid recognizing capital gain on the donated shares
Potentially receive a charitable deduction based on the fair market value of the securities
subject to applicable tax rules and limitations.
How it works:
Contact your broker or financial advisor.
Tell them you wish to make an in-kind charitable transfer of securities to Unity of Kalamazoo.
Your broker will need Unity's brokerage account and DTC transfer information.
Please notify our office of your name, the stock being transferred, number of shares, and approximate transfer date so we can identify and acknowledge your gift.
Unity will provide you with a written acknowledgment of the securities received.
Important: Please do not sell the stock yourself if your intention is to make a gift of
appreciated securities. Selling first may create a taxable capital gain.
